Okay, so it’s taken me ages, but here it is. Also, when I finally finished writing this, it turned out waaay too long, so I broke it up into two parts. I didn’t feel like re-writing the intro though, so it’s still there the way it was.
Okay, es hat ewig gedauert, aber jetzt ist es hier. Und als ich es endlich fertig geschrieben hatte, war der Post viiiel zu lang, also habe ich ihn in zwei geteilt. Ich hatte aber keine Lust die Einleitung umzuschreiben, also ist sie noch so da, wie sie am Anfang war.
I was completely spot on in my prediction that March would be a busy and wonderful reading month for me! I had a lot of things going on, so when I did have free time I spent it reading, rather than writing about reading. But I did read a lot of good books (in fact, I liked everything I read) so there is a lot to talk about. There will also be a part 2 soon, about all the short fiction I read, i.e. short-stories, novellas, collections, to keep this a bit shorter. WARNING: It didn’t work so great. This is very long.
Last Dragon Standing (Heartstrikers #5)

The first of my “anticipated reads” this was a pretty good ending to the Heartstriker series. It might not be my favorite of the series, but there were emotional pay-offs, laughter and even a couple of tears. Having so many different groups working together against a common enemy led to funny interactions and there were a few twists I did not see coming. To be honest I wanted to write a whole review about it, but I decided to put it off until I’ve read it a second time. I don’t know whether I wasn’t in quite the right mood for it or if perhaps the plot-armor for a lot of the characters has grown too thick, but I wasn’t as afraid for them as I was in some of the earlier books. Nonetheless, I had a lot of fun reading Last Dragon Standing and highly recommend the series for Urban Fantasy fans!

I talked (wrote?) about the first two books last month, so go check that out! After a break for Last Dragon Standing I continued the series in audio format but switched to ebooks because it’s so much faster. I actually read all three in a row since they pick up right after the earlier one ends. They sort of have cliff hangers, to be honest, so if that puts you off, you’ve been warned. They don’t really end in the middle of the action, but it feels that way and you want to know what happens next. It’s how I feel about the next book; however, I have no idea when it will be released…

First reaction: Awwwwww, that was such a cute book!!! And that background soundtrack of Hold On by Chord Overstreet was just perfect – even if the lyrics don’t fit at all. Another one of the books I was looking forward to this year, the second contemporary romance by this author might end up an even bigger favorite of mine than her first (see below). Emmie and Ox face some difficulties, including that age-old thing about communication, but their actions always feel believable (for me personally Emmie’s more than Ox’s because I identified with her more – I don’t think I would confront someone in a restaurant…). I liked how the relationship developed over the course of the book. There may have been some insta-attraction, but the characters do not mistake it for any more. The rest happens organically.
INK actually made me reconsider my stand on tattoos (can look very nice on other people but are not for me) and made me want to buy some bookish t-shirts – why don’t I own any already? I should probably start with that before thinking of anything more permanent…

I honestly cannot say which of the series by Ilona Andrews is my favorite. They are all soooo goooood. This one has a slow-burn romance, complex and lovable characters with hilarious dialogue and family dynamics, fantastic magic and world-building and great mystery plots. I really hope there will be more instalments in the future, maybe with the same protagonists, maybe about Nevada’s sisters, maybe even a time-jump and something about Matilda! There are some open plot-lines after all – or one at least. Although I remain convinced that Ceasar’s identity has been made obvious to the readers if not the characters by the end.
BREAKING NEWS: On April 18th, the authors announced on their blog that there will be a novella and three more novels!!! YESSSS!!!!

A spin-off of the Immortal Descendants series focusing on Ringo’s life after his adventures with Saira and co. This was a nice historical mystery with a bit of paranormal thrown in. You don’t need to have read Saira’s series to enjoy this one! We didn’t really get any scenes from Ringo’s point of view before, but he was an interesting character with charisma and insight who learned and experienced things no one else in his life (apart from his wife Charlie whose role could have been a bit more prominent in my opinion) can ever know about. This book follows him as he figures out how he can live his life and leave a mark without actually impacting anything too greatly – he knows how bad changes to history can be. This actually reminded me of the Dominion series by Kat Ross, another spin-off from a historical fantasy series, which is inspired by Sherlock Holmes. If you like one, you will probably like the other!

Since I like his Athanate books so much and this one is only 3€, I tried it when I was in a sci-fi mood before I could get my hands on my copy of Obsidio. Corruption and coups, AIs – or more accurately Self Actualized Entities – a protagonist on the run who turns to bodyguard/personal tutor work and a hint of romance make for an action-packed mystery. This was an enjoyable read with details gradually revealed and emotional journeys for a lot of the characters. But the romance didn’t really need to be a part of this book. It didn’t feel forced exactly, but it didn’t feel well-developed either. It had a bit of an insta-love feel – though it isn’t that, precisely – because the characters don’t interact all that much and don’t know a lot about each other before they fall in love. Nevertheless, I had fun and recommend trying a sample!

Im März Gelesen – Romane
Ich lag mit meiner Vermutung, dass März ein voller und wunderbarer Lesemonat für mich sein würde genau richtig! Ich hatte viel zu tun, deshalb habe ich die Freizeit die ich hatte damit verbracht zu lesen, anstatt übers Lesen zu schreiben. Aber ich habe viele gute Bücher gelesen (ich habe sogar alles gemocht, was ich gelesen habe), also gibt es viel zu besprechen. Und bald wird es einen Teil 2 geben, über die kürzeren Sachen, die ich gelesen habe, also Kurzgeschichten, Novellen, Anthologien, um den Post hier kürzer zu halten. WARNUNG: Es hat nicht so super funktioniert. Das hier ist sehr lang.

Das erste meiner „heiß erwarteten Bücher“ war ein ziemlich gutes Ende für die Heartstriker Reihe. Es mag nicht mein Lieblingsteil sein, aber es gab emotionale Momente: Gelächter und sogar ein paar Tränen. Dadurch, dass so viele unterschiedliche Gruppen gegen einen gemeinsamen Feind zusammenarbeiten, kam es zu lustigen Interaktionen und ein paar Wendungen, die ich nicht habe kommen sehen. Um ehrlich zu sein wollte ich eine ganze Rezension darüber schreiben, aber ich hab mich entschieden, damit zu warten bis ich es ein zweites Mal gelesen habe. Ich weiß nicht, ob ich einfach nicht in der richtigen Stimmung war oder ob vielleicht die Plot-Armor für viele der Charaktere zu dick geworden ist, aber ich hatte nicht so viel Angst um sie, wie manchen der vorhergehenden Bücher. Trotzdem hatte ich viel Spaß beim Lesen von Last Dragon Standing und empfehle die Reihe an alle Urban Fantasy Fans!

Von den ersten zwei Bücher habe ich letzten Monat erzählt, also schau es dir an! Nach einer Pause für Last Dragon Standing habe ich die Reihe weiter in Audioformat gelesen, bin dann aber auf eBooks umgestiegen, weil es so viel schneller geht. Ich habe sogar alle drei nacheinander gelesen, weil sie direkt ineinander übergehen. Ehrlich gesagt haben sie ein bisschen Cliffhanger, also wenn du so etwas nicht magst, war das deine Warnung. Die Bücher hören nicht absolut mitten in der Action auf, aber es fühlt sich so an und man will unbedingt wissen, was als nächstes passiert. So denke ich auch über das nächste Buch, aber ich habe keine Ahnung, wann es veröffentlicht wird…

Erste Reaktion: Awwwwww, das war so ein süßes Buch!!! Und der Hintergrundsoundtrack Hold On von Chord Overstreet war perfekt – obwohl der Liedtext überhaupt nicht passt. Noch eins meiner erwarteten Bücher, könnte diese zweite Romanze von der Autorin noch ein größerer Favorit werden, als die erste (siehe unten). Emmie und Ox sehen sich ein paar Schwierigkeiten gegenüber, darunter das uralte Kommunikationsproblem, aber ihre Handlungen fühlen sich immer glaubhaft an (für mich persönlich die von Emmie mehr als die von Ox weil ich mich mit ihr mehr identifizieren kann – ich glaube nicht, dass ich jemanden in einem Restaurant konfrontieren würde…). Ich mochte die Entwicklung der Beziehung über das ganze Buch. Es mag zwar etwas Anziehung auf den ersten Blick gegeben haben, aber die Charaktere halten es auch nicht für mehr als das. Der Rest passiert sehr natürlich.
INK hat mich sogar dazu gebracht, meine Haltung zu Tattoos (können bei anderen Leuten schön aussehen, sind aber nichts für mich) zu überdenken und ein paar T-Shirts mit Büchermotto zu kaufen – warum habe ich überhaupt noch keine? Ich sollte wohl besser damit anfangen, bevor ich über etwas Permanenteres nachdenke…

Ich kann wirklich nicht sagen, welche von Ilona Andrews‘ Reihen ich am liebsten mag. Die sind alle soooo guuuut. Diese hier hat eine sich-langsam-entwickelnde Liebesgeschichte, komplexe und liebenswerte Charaktere mit witzigen Dialogen und Familiendynamik, großartiger Magie und Welt und super Mystery-Handlungen. Ich hoffe wirklich, dass es in Zukunft noch mehr Teile geben wird, vielleicht mit den gleichen Protagonisten, vielleicht über Nevadas Schwestern, vielleicht sogar ein Zeitsprung und etwas über Matilda! Es gibt immerhin noch ein paar offene Fragen – oder zumindest eine. Allerdings bin ich immer noch überzeugt, dass Caesars Identität am Ende für die Leser offensichtlich ist, wenn auch nicht für die Charaktere.
SCHLAGZEILEN: Am 18. April haben die Autoren auf ihrem Blog verkündet, dass es noch eine Novelle und drei Romane geben wird!!! YESSSS!!!!

Ein Spin-Off der Immortal Descendants Reihe handelt von Ringos Leben nach seinen Abenteuern mit Saira und co. Es war eine schöne historische Mysterygeschichte mit ein bisschen Paranormal eingestreut. Man muss Sairas Reihe nicht gelesen habe, um diese hier zu mögen! Wir haben bis jetzt noch nicht viele Szenen aus Ringos Sicht bekommen, aber er war ein interessanter Charakter mit Charisma und Intelligenz, der Dinge erlebt hat, die niemand in seinem Leben (außer seiner Frau Charlie, deren Rolle meiner Meinung nach etwas größer hätte sein können) jemals erfahren kann. Dieses Buch folgt ihm dabei, wie er versucht herauszufinden, wie er sein Leben leben und etwas verändern kann, ohne dabei tatsächlich irgendetwas zu sehr zu beeinflussen – er weiß, wie furchtbar Veränderungen der Geschichte sein können. Das Buch hat mich an die Dominion-Reihe von Kat Ross erinnert, noch ein Spin-Off einer historischen Fantasy-Serie, der von Sherlock Holmes inspiriert ist. Wenn du eine Reihe magst, wird dir wahrscheinlich auch die andere gefallen!

Weil ich seine Athanate Bücher so gern mag und das hier nur 3€ kostete, habe ich es ausprobiert als ich Lust auf Sci-Fi hatte und meine Ausgabe von Obsidio noch nicht in die Hände kriegen konnte. Korruption und Coups, KIs – oder besser gesagt, Selbstrealisiertes Wesen – eine Protagonistin auf der Flucht, die zu Bodyguard/Privatlehrer Arbeit übergeht und ein Hauch von Romantik machen eine Action-reiche Mystery-Geschichte. Es war ein unterhaltsames Buch, das Details allmählig offenbart und emotionale Entwicklungen für viele der Charaktere. Aber die Liebesgeschichte hätte wirklich nicht da sein müssen. Es hat sich nicht direkt gezwungen angefühlt, aber auch nicht gut entwickelt. Es ging ein bisschen in die Insta-Love Richtung – auch wenn es das nicht genau trifft – denn die Charaktere interagieren nicht sehr viel und kennen sich nicht sehr gut, bevor sie sich verlieben. Ich hatte aber trotzdem Spaß und empfehle einen Auszug auszuprobieren!
